My project focuses on the role of the Axl receptor in the homeostasis of the oral-gut axis. Given the relevance and frequency of systemic comorbidities arising from the translocation of oral bacteria, understanding the immunological mechanisms involved in this condition is necessary to encourage the development of therapeutic strategies applied to personalized therapy. Many immunological mechanisms may be involved in the loss of colonization resistance and consequent expansion of pathobionts and oro-digestive translocation. The absence of the Axl tyrosine kinase receptor, involved in efferocytosis, causes intestinal dysbiosis in susceptible animals. So, I believe that efferocytosis might be a mechanism involved in the susceptibility of individuals to exacerbated inflammation and the consequent breakdown of oral-intestinal homeostasis.
